Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Department Manager to lead our Hydrogen and Electrochemistry department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. The Manager will report to the Division Director for Integrated Energy and Storage Systems.

The Hydrogen and Electrochemistry Department works to valorize clean and renewable energy by researching, developing, and demonstrating technologies that use heat and electricity to create chemicals and fuels from the microgram to kilogram scales. The Department Manager provides leadership over three research groups: transient kinetic analysis, chemical processing, and hydrogen and thermal systems.

Work conducted across these three groups includes a combination of laboratory performance evaluation, advanced technology development, and computational analysis. The Department applies advanced systems engineering techniques and analyses to define testing protocols, testing requirements and procedures, performance metrics, assessment methodologies, advanced performance and design modeling tools and advanced data analysis techniques.

Responsibilities:

The Manager is responsible for expanding the capability of science-based technology development, testing, and performance assessment to produce clean hydrogen, chemicals, and fuels, and has the latitude to define new avenues of research and collaboration that enhance the deployment of these systems with customers in DOE, DOD, and the private sector.

The Manager develops and executes business and technical strategy leading to program growth and impact, capability enhancement, and technical leadership that requires coordination with industry, universities, other laboratories, or other departments. This responsibility includes development and regular updates to a talent plan that includes succession candidates, competencies, recruiting targets, and required resources.

The Manager is also responsible for resource allocation and work performance for projects within the department and work with other Department Managers to ensure successful completion of cross-department, division, and directorate research activities.

The Manager will be the Funds Manager for approximately 50 projects providing oversight, guidance, mentoring to Principal Investigators, and accountability for project milestones and deliverables.

The Manager will lead department efforts to attract and retain top-notch talent. This includes working closely with HR recruiters, compensation, the onboarding staff, and with EES&T management.

The Manager will conduct and oversee staff performance, merit, and professional development.

The Manager will also recruit and mentor group leads within the department.

In addition to management activities, at least 30% of time will be dedicated to performing technical activities.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements

Degree in an engineering or science discipline. Advanced degree preferred but not required.

Minimum 5 years relevant experience with a Ph.D., 10 years with a MS, or 15 years with a BS.

The Manager must have a proven research track record in engineering, chemistry, or physics specialties of relevance to hydrogen production; complex systems modeling, analyses, and data reduction; and testing of complex engineering systems.

The Manager should also have a demonstrated track record in business development and scholarly publication.

Job Information:

  • Salary Grade: MR0400 -$143,124 - $243,312
