Job Summary

Under minimum supervision, perform a variety of tasks assisting journeyman mechanics or lead persons in maintaining and repairing a variety of facilities plumbing and HVAC machinery and equipment. Will also participate in work involving rehabilitation and alterations to rooms, laboratories and offices with a career path directed toward Plumbing Mechanic.

Essential Job Duties

  • Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
  • Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on plumbing systems and components such as emergency showers and eyewash stations.
  • Assist in the installation of plumbing fixtures and equipment.
  • Provide written and oral reports effectively.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience in maintenance or construction.
  • Must possess general knowledge of carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning crafts.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with the members of the Caltech community in all situations, and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to work various shifts as well as overtime and weekends.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive Institute vehicles.
  • Must be eligible and be able to adhere to the Institute's Motor Vehicle policy.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to follow written instructions.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds daily, bend, climb stairs, squeeze with arms and hands, properly operate machinery, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to distinguish between various colorful cords and wires.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year or more of work experience in a university setting is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Asset Works and Kronos or similar preventive maintenance and timekeeping software would be a plus.
  • Strong teamwork, project management and problem resolution skills.
  • Software proficiency in MS Word, Excel, MS Project, E-Builder and Outlook.

Hiring Range

$23.50 - $30.25 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
