Job Summary
Under minimum supervision, perform a variety of tasks assisting journeyman mechanics or lead persons in maintaining and repairing a variety of facilities plumbing and HVAC machinery and equipment. Will also participate in work involving rehabilitation and alterations to rooms, laboratories and offices with a career path directed toward Plumbing Mechanic.
Essential Job Duties
- Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
- Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on plumbing systems and components such as emergency showers and eyewash stations.
- Assist in the installation of plumbing fixtures and equipment.
- Provide written and oral reports effectively.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience in maintenance or construction.
- Must possess general knowledge of carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning crafts.
- Ability to communicate professionally with the members of the Caltech community in all situations, and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
- Ability to work various shifts as well as overtime and weekends.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive Institute vehicles.
- Must be eligible and be able to adhere to the Institute's Motor Vehicle policy.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with strong oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to follow written instructions.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds daily, bend, climb stairs, squeeze with arms and hands, properly operate machinery, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to distinguish between various colorful cords and wires.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 year or more of work experience in a university setting is a plus.
- Proficiency with Asset Works and Kronos or similar preventive maintenance and timekeeping software would be a plus.
- Strong teamwork, project management and problem resolution skills.
- Software proficiency in MS Word, Excel, MS Project, E-Builder and Outlook.
